JISUN SHIN

이 작업은 자연물을 대하고 해석하는 태도에 대한 것이다. 조선시대 민화에서도 볼 수 있듯이 자연에 인간 삶과 사회의 의미를 담아 해석하는 관습은 오래된 일이다. 현재에는 각 지역마다 꽃, 나무, 새를 정하여 지역을 대표하는 상징물로 명명한다. 지정된 꽃, 나무는 환경 정비와 가로수로 사용되고 시민들이 인지하지 못한 사이에 해당 지역의 환경을 구성하기도 한다. 서울시의 20개 구에 지정된 꽃, 나무, 새를 차용한 이 사진 작업은 자연에 의미를 부여하는 관습에서 나오는 해석과 오해에 관한 것이다. 조화, 박제된 새, 수종(樹種)이 불분명한 나무의 얽히고 설킨 상징들, 즉 지역 행정이 자연물에 부여하는 의미와 기계적인 해석의 나열을 통해 우리가 자연에서 원래 무엇을 보는지 더듬어 보려고 한다.

This work shows the attitude about observing and interpreting natural objects. As seen in folk panting during the Joseon Dynasty, tradition of interpreting nature by including life of human and society is from our history. Today, every place designates flowers, trees or birds as symbols representing them. The designated flowers or trees are used as a part of environment improvement or street flowers or trees, and become big part of local environment even without being recognized by people. The photo work carried out in 20 Districts in Seoul by borrowing designated flowers, trees and birds is about interpretation and misunderstanding, which is from tradition giving meaning to nature. With complex and knotty symbols of artificial flowers, stuffed birds, and trees whose species are not clear, in other words, I try to explore what we originally look at in nature through arranging meaning to natural objects given by local administrative agencies and unreasonable interpretation.
