나의 작업은 나의 환경이 되어 온 수많은 지식, 문화들을 바라보며 일상생활 깊숙히 파고 들어 눈치채지 못했던 이야기를 끄집어 낸다. 이는 실재하는 구체적인 장소들 혹은 사물들에 특별한 인식적 의미를 부여하려는 탐사여행이 된다. 언어를 따라 그 지시물을 현실에서 발견해내는 하나의 게임이며, 현실과 허구의 간극을 순간적으로 밀착 시키려는 상상적 시도이기도 하다. 개인적인 사건에서 시작되는 단서들은 나를 둘러싼 장소와 환경이 어떻게 연관되고 서로 영향을 미치는 지에 대한 관찰이고 풍자적인 해석과 함께 그 이면을 읽어내는 것이다.
구체적인 장소를 이동하며 수집된 이야기들은 다각적인 시각의 해석을 통한 다양한 매체로 재해석되어 장소에 축적된 겹을 밝히는 방식으로 행위하고자 한다. 아파트로 둘러싸인 중산층의 동네가 관광지로 바뀌는 상상을 통해 통용되는 가치를 전도시키거나, 수 백년간 궁궐의 영향을 받은 동네를 정책적이고 건축적인 흔적의 켜의 나열을 통해 구조화된 풍경 속의 자생적인 미학을 발견하고, 유명인물이 산다는 이유로 아이콘이 되어 온 동네의 실제 이야기를 담으며 관념화된 기억을 들추어낸다.
현대를 살면서 망각되어 온 나의 배경은 다른 존재의 문화적인 교류를 통해 더욱 뚜렷해진다. 작업을 통해 느슨한 연대를 이루는 공동체인 공간에서 찾아내는 문화는 우리 모두의 배경이 되고 발견된 우리가 된다.
My work is to observe a great deal of knowledge and culture, a part of my environment, and take out stories which I have not been able to notice, because they are penetrated deep into my daily life. This is a journey to explore and give special cognitive meaning to specific places or objects actually existing. It can be one of games discovering indicators in reality according to language, and an imaginary attempt to narrow a gap between reality and unreality in a moment. In other words, clues starting from individual events are equal to observation about how places and environment surrounding me are related with each other, and how they have impacts, and I read its hidden sides with sarcastic interpretation.
Stories collected by moving to specific places are re-interpreted in various perspectives and media, and play a role in disclosing accumulated layers in the specific places. For example, values being used are transmitted by imagining the- middle-class-living-communities surrounded by apartments are transferred to tourist attraction, self-generated aesthetics is discovered out of structured sceneries from communities influenced by palaces for hundreds of years by arranging layers of political and architectural traces, and idealized memories are exposed by containing living stories of the entire communities which have become an icon because famous figures live there.
My background buried in oblivion as I have lived today gets clearer through the cultural exchange with other existence. Culture discovered in space through the work, communities with loose bonds, becomes our background and us being disclosed.
