바라본 풍경  Contemplating The Landscape , 2015

부대를 제대하면서 사회로 돌아가는 군인들은 2년간의 군생활을 마무리하며 군인들의 자부심이 묻어있는 여러 다른 부대 흉장을 기념으로 소지품에 오바로크를 한다고 한다. 부대의 흉장들은 각기 용기와 승리등을 상징하고 동물의 힘에 빗대어 부대의 무형적인 힘을 대변하면서 우리는 부대마크 등에서 심심치 않게 동 식물을 볼수 있게 되었다. 아이러니 하게도 분단의 현실 속에서 생겨난 혹은 보존된 자연은 어느 무엇보다 희귀한 동식물을 바라볼 수 있는 유례 없는 장소가 되었다. 군인들이 DMZ를 대치하면서 바라본 풍경과 동물들은 부대의 강한 힘을 상징했던 동물이 아닌 자연 속에서 바라본 평화로운 동 식물이었을 것이다. 그들이 2년간 바라본 혹은 우리가 근 70년간 바라본 북쪽을 향한 풍경을 상징적인 풍경화로 제작하고 이를 패치의 형식으로 만들고자 한다.

After two years of military service, soldiers go home with all kinds of military embroidered badges on their belongings. These patchworks represent courage, victory and sometimes intangible power symbolised through animals. As well as animals there are botanic elements on these badges. Ironically, Korean Demilitarized Zone( DMZ) is a peculiar place where we can find wild animals and plants, including rare species which you cannot find anywhere else in Korea. Soldiers contemplate DMZ and its nature not as powerful military symbolic view but a peaceful natural place. The scene young soldiers have been gazing for two years during their service, and the scene we have been watching for eighty years after the Korean War, will be interpreted as a patchwork form in a symbolic landscape.
