< 틀뢴, 우끄바르, 오르비스 떼르띠우스> 라는 보르헤스의 단편소설을 읽다보면 사실과 환상이 뒤섞인 기묘한 상황을 접하게 된다. 틀뢴이라는 가상세계의 지명인 '우끄바르'가 실재하지 않는데도 그곳이 백과사전에 나와 있다는 보르헤스의 정교한 증거제시에 설득당한 독자는 실제와 허구의 경계가 허물어진 제 3의 세계로 점점 빨려 들어간다. 정신을 똑바로 차리고 보르헤스가 깔아놓은 텍스트의 징검다리를 아무리 조심스럽게 두들겨보며 건너더라도 어느 샌가 세계의 안과 밖이 뒤집히고 복잡하게 얽혀있는 미로의 한 지점에 홀황하게 서 있기 마련이다.

이런 체험은 비단 문학적인 것만으로 끝나지 않는다. 대도시의 어느 길가에서 문득 시공간의 감각이 헝클어지며 소름이 돋아날 때가 있다. 하늘을 향해 높이 치솟고 있는 거대한 사각형의 콘크리트 건물들과 줄을 지어 내달리는 자동차들, 그리고 형형색색의 옷을 입고 어디론가 흘러가는 군중들 속에서 갑자기 낯설게 다가오는 풍경을 느끼며 문명의 광기가 그려놓은 스산한 환영을 목도하기도 한다. 우주가 거대한 마야(maya 미망)라고 한다면 우리 눈앞의 현실도 너무나 리얼한 환상에 불과한 것이다. 사람들은 그 철저히 리얼한 환상 속에서 그저 자신들에게 할당된 욕망의 궤도에 충실히 몸을 던질 뿐이다.

그런데 우리가 항상 탈출을 꿈꿀 정도로 삭막하게 보이는 이런 문명의 일상적인 모습도 작가 신지선의 '아파트 관광'에서는 위트와 유머로써 따뜻한 환상이 되어 다시 살아난다.

보르헤스의 환상문학을 떠올리게 하는 '아파트 관광가이드'를 보면 작가의 거주지인 동성아파트 단지가 볼거리, 유적지, 놀이, 식물원, 예술, 쇼핑, 체험장, 야경 등으로 나뉘어 체계적으로 소개되어 있다. 예를 들면 그는 진부해 보이는 아파트 건물들을 거대조각상이라 소개하고 둥근 가로등을 진주양식장이라 설명해 놓았다. 또 공사 중인 보도블록들을 보여주며 멋진 퍼즐그림을 볼 수 있다고 추천하거나 시도 때도 없이 출몰하는 고양이를 보며 사파리관광을 즐기라고 너스레를 떤다. 그러다가 몸에 좋다는 지역특산품 공기캡슐을 소개하는 대목에 이르면 어쩐지 몇 개라도 구입해서 복용해봐야 할 것 같은 진지한 마음마저 든다.

이렇게 어릴 적 누구라도 한 번쯤 농담처럼 주고받았을 법한 소재를 그는 보다 철저한 차원으로 밀고 나간다. 더욱이 식물원 코너의 풀 심기에 대한 다음과 같은 소개를 보면 그의작업이 단지 위트와 유머의 수준을 넘어 매우 상징적인 문맥으로 읽혀진다.

'평소에 나무를 자르는 일을 했던 정원사 씨는 이에 죄책감을 느껴 이곳 퍼즐바닥 사이사이에 풀들을 심으신다고 한다. 그는 식물을 함부로 대하는 사람들에게 식물의 강인함을 확인시키고자 이 일을 시작했다고 하는데, 이곳을 구경하다 보면 정원사 씨의 놀라운 풀 심기 솜씨를 볼 수 있다.'(아파트 관광가이드 중에서 )

아파트 관리인이 아무리 깨끗하게 깎고 정리하려 해도 보도블록 사이사이에 끈질기게 돋아나는 잡초들을 보며 작가는 정원사 씨가 이 풀들을 솜씨 있게 잘 심었다고 칭찬하며 상황을 재치 있게 역전시키고 있는 것이다. 특히 사진으로 보여준 보도블록 사이의 잡초들은 우리를 답답하게 감싸고 있는 잿빛 콘크리트 문명에 균열을 가하는 근원적인 생명력을 의미할 뿐만 아니라 현실과 가상의 적절한 혼용을 통해 무미건조한 삶의 틈바구니에서 해학적 긍정성을 이끌어내는 신지선의 작업방식을 상징적으로 보여준다고 할 수 있다.

그리고 작가는 스스로 '아파트 관광'프로젝트가 알맹이 없는 관광문화를 은근히 꼬집는 측면에서 출발했다고 하지만 오히려 현실에서 가상의 이야기를 이끌어 내고 이를 다시 현실 속으로 생생히 침투시키는 전략이 불러일으키는 쾌감과 실제로 주변의 현실을 변화시키는 힘이 더욱 돋보인다. 이런 힘은 결국 동성아파트 주민들이 허구의 아파트 관광 프로젝트를 자신들의 아파트가 홍보되고 각박한 인간관계를 부드럽게 만드는 현실적 매개체로 받아들여 협조하는 분위기에서도 파악될 수 있다.

'현실'이라는 것은 무엇일까? 다만 우리가 알 수 있는 것은 각자의 내적 마음과 외부의 체험이 서로 뒤섞이며 생성되는 그 '어떤 것'일 뿐이다. 일본의 철학자 나카자와 신이치는 그의 저서 '신의 발명'에서 이와 같이 현실을 파악하는 방식에 대해, 오스트렐리아의 원주민 애보리진은 '드림타임(꿈의 시간)'이라 부른다고 소개하고 있다. 드림타임의 의미에서 신지선의 작업은 어쩌면 가장 '현실적'이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 그것은 작가의 내적 상상력과 외적 경험이 교합하며 새로운 환상을 빚어내는 '작가적 현실'이기도 하다.

작가의 명명에 의해 특별한 관광지로 변해버린 동성아파트는 이제 현실이 환상으로 비약하고 환상이 현실로 진화하는 공간이며 상상력이 자라나는 작가의 낙원이다. 이곳에서 신지선의 '드림타임'이 보다 정교한 꿈들을 부화시켜 나가는 상상을 해본다.

<While reading a Borges’ short story, I faced a strange situation where fact and fiction mixed. Readers are persuaded by refined evidence that ‘Uqbar,’ the name of a place appears in encyclopedia. It, in fact, is not real. In the story, the boundaries between real and unreal things are blurred.
This experience does not simply end with literature. On occasions, my sense of time and space gets disheveled in the middle of a big city street. I feel strange observing a nervous illusion in this mad civilization. I am in a huge rectangle of concrete that reaches to the sky with cars rapidly passing and a crowd rushing somewhere dressed in many colors. The facade is a huge delusion; the seeming reality under my nose is only an illusion. In this thoroughly real illusion, people faithfully throw their bodies to the orbit of desire.
This general dreary scene of civilization is where we dream of escape all the time. Our dream of escape is revived by the wit and humor of artist Shin Ji-sun’s work titled “Apartment Tour Guide.”
Her work reminds us of the fantasy literature of Borges. Shin Ji-sun divides her apartment complex, Dongsung, into points of interests such as; historic areas, an entertainment district, a botanical garden, a shopping mall, and place to go for a night view. For example, she introduces a trite apartment building as a huge sculpture, and a round road lamp as a pearl farm. She suggests the sidewalk paving blocks are a giant puzzle, and boasts that the frequently disappearing and reappearing cats are part of a safari-like zoo. When I read the information about the locally bottled air, which is good for your health, I felt persuaded to buy it.
Her work is read as symbolic context with a lot of humor, for example in the introduction about plants in botanical garden.
She writes, “The gardener plants weeds in openings of the puzzle floor. He does this because he feels guilty about his previous work, which was cutting down the woods. The gardener wants to display the hardiness of the weeds. We can see the gardener's marvelous skill in the botanical gardens.” -From “Apartment Tour Guide.”
The gardener planted the weeds skillfully, saying that the weeds survive no matter how faithfully the maintenance workers of the apartment try to trim and clear them. Reversing the usual situation, which would be to blame the maintenance workers, the artist gives tribute to the gardener. The weeds in pavement blocks seen in the photo are meant to symbolize our deep-rooted power, which opens the gray concrete civilization surrounding us. It also symbolically shows that the artist extracts humorous optimism in the meaningless life, by mixing reality and imagination.
The artist draws imagination from reality, although she says “Apartment Tour” was started to lampoon tourism. She shows her power to seep into reality again, followed by change to realize the actual environment. In the end, this power is also seen in the cooperative atmosphere in which the residents of Dongsung Apartment receive this project as a real medium to make human relationships and to advertise their apartment.
What is "reality"? We know that it is "something" generated in the heart and in our experiences. The Japanese philosopher, Nakajawa Shinichi, said in his book "Invention of God," that the native Australian Aborigines called reality "dream time." Shin Ji-sun’s work is a lot like dream time. It is also a reality of the artist, and it creates new illusions by mixing internal imagination and external experience.
Dongsung apartment, which has been turned into a special tour site by the artist, is now a space where reality leaps into illusion, illusion evolves into reality, and paradise of imagination grows there. I imagine that Shin Ji-sun's "dream time" will hatch out more refined dreams from this place.
